WASHINGTON - The US news agency the Associated Press plans to reduce its staff by 10 percent over the next year, mostly through attrition, AP president and chief executive Tom Curley said Thursday.
Curley announced the planned staff reduction during a “town hall” webcast meeting of employees of the New York-based newspaper cooperative, AP spokesman Paul Colford said.
The AP quoted Curley as saying that the move, which would amount to more than 400 jobs, was a result of a reduction in fees paid by member newspapers and the declining economy.

MANILA, Philippines - Cellular phones carrying Google’s operating system will soon be available in the Philippines through handsets manufactured by Taiwanese firm HTC.
HTC Philippines country manager Mark Sergio said the company is currently preparing to ship the Android-based phones after receiving a lot of inquiries about the G1 phone from curious customers.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The widely used herbal supplement Ginkgo biloba does not appear to prevent Alzheimer’s disease in healthy elderly people or those with mild cognitive impairment, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.
The study involved 3,069 people age 75 or older at five U.S. locations who were tracked for six years on average, half taking twice-daily doses of 120 milligrams of extract from the leaves of the ginkgo tree and the rest taking a placebo.
